Searching for real women mechanics for a future Female Mechanics Calendar

The 2007 Female Mechanics Calendar has been so well received that Sarah is continuing the project. This summer she is setting out on her 1977 BMW R100S to travel across the country documenting women who work in the field of mechanics.

Sarah is currently looking for all types of mechanics:

automobile, motorcycle, diesel, aircraft, military vehicle,

scooter, bicycle, hot rod, etc.

“Women in Motorcycling – California Lifetime Achievement Awards”

Award Winners Chosen

Real Women Ride, Inc., dba Women’s Motorcycle Events, as part of the Annual Motorcycle Expo in Auburn, California joined forces with Biker Ally Magazine and announced its intent to hold an annual event to recognize women who have made a positive and significant impact in motorcycling.

After reviewing the several nominations received, 2007 Award winners were chosen by a few very well-known ladies in the field: Susan Carpenter, L.A. Times, Jasmine Bluecreek-Clark of Biker Ally (and also a great mechanic and MSF Coach), Becky Brown, founder of Women in the Wind, Ragan Jenkins, photographer/rider extraordinaire, and Joyce McCleod, rider and one of the organizers of the event for

Gold Moms during Rolling Thunder.

This very prestigious award committee has selected six ladies as award recipients:

1. Dayna Davidson, Excellence in Portraying a Positive Image of Women and Street Bikes.

2. Nancy Nemecek, Outstanding Contributions Toward Protecting the Rights of Motorcyclists and Promoting Rider Safety.

3. Donna Palladino, Outstanding Contributions Toward Projecting a Positive Image of Women in Motorcycling.

5. Gin Shear and Sue Slate, Outstanding Contributions Toward Projecting a Positive Image of Women in Motorcycling.

6. Ruby Weber, Outstanding Contributions Toward Protecting the /Rights of Motorcyclists and Promoting Rider Safety.

The recipients will be given their awards at an informal breakfast sponsored by Real Women Ride, Biker Ally and Auburn’s Out the Door Motorsports on June 3rd at 8:30 am at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn, California just prior to the day’s 2nd Annual Motorcycle Expo events. Happy Mother's Day to all Moto Moms!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moto Moms!

There is one single day of the year where I am guaranteed a moment of serenity on my bike: Mother’s Day. Yes, on Mother’s Day, it’s been tradition that my family grants me the day off. An entire day to do whatever it takes to get my sanity back; to indulge for 24 hours. And today’s forecast promised to deliver a perfect ride.

I’ve discovered the best way to clear my head of the crazies is to ride. Nothing like a moto-jaunt down a lonely country road in the cool spring morning air to feel a sense of renewal. It took almost an entire tank of gas to get there, but I had arrived – happiness achieved. The rest of my special day was left for lazing around, to ignore that pile of laundry waiting to be done, and instead reflect on my ride and relish the fleeting quite moments of an empty house that would soon be filled again with family racket – a noise that only a mother can love and appreciate. Happy Mother’s Day.

Ride with the Rockers and Women’s National Ride Day

  It’s only May 3 and we’re already intoxicated with the bevy of motorcycle buzz brewing this month. For starters, the Ride with the Rockers rolls out of Los Angeles for a two-day ride up the California coast and ends up at the Ritz Carlton for the second annual Legend of the Motorcycle Concours D'Elegance. Our friend, Carla King, is joining this bunch (she mentions something about riding with the Sex Pistols!) and promises to share with Helmet Hair readers all the misadventures she’ll be entertaining. Until then, we’ll get back to finishing up her book, American Borders (www.motorcyclemisadventures.com) to continue living vicariously through her.

Another female rider who takes life by the handles, Vicki Gray of Motoress, has declared May 4 as National Female Ride Day. Although this originated in Canada, she calls on all female riders from across the globe to get on their bike and show solidarity. Hell yeah - riders unite!
