As many of you are aware, today is Ride to Work Day so we hope that you were able to show your solidarity by choosing to ride your bike instead of commuting by car. There are so many smart reasons to drive two-wheels over four on a daily basis. And even if it’s impossible for you to make that commitment everyday (say you have kids in tow or you have to work in suits), hopefully today will help get you thinking about how motorcycling can fit more into your daily transport.

Today, hundreds of thousands of motorcycles and scooters will descend on workplaces across the country as part of Ride to Work Day, a popular annual commuting event for riders. Ride to Work Day has grown to include hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists worldwide who believe that riding to work en masse on a single, focused day will demonstrate the positive social, environmental and economic impact of motorcycles and scooters. The event is promoted by many motorcycling groups and organizations, and is led by Ride To Work, a non-profit advocacy effort.

Participation in the yearly demonstration is estimated to triple the number of riders on the road and save tens of thousands of gallons of gasoline. Riders say adding more motorcycles and scooters to the daily commute helps make urban parking easier and traffic flow better. "For many people, riding is a socially responsible form of mobility that saves energy, helps the environment and provides a broad range of other public benefits," stated Andy Goldfine, the organizer.

City of Gettysburg Recognizes two Leading Ladies in Motorcycling

During the 15^th annual Mid-Atlantic Women’s Motorcycle rally held in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Mayor William Troxell presented a Key to The City Of Gettysburg to Jennifer Levan and Sara Liberte.  Jennifer Levan is co-owner of Battelfield Harley Davidson in Gettysburg, PA and Sara Liberte is co-owner of RT’s North Hills Cycle Inc. In Pittsburgh, PA.  The two ladies were recognized for their dedication to the Motorcycling community and continuous effort to better the community.

The practice of bestowing a ceremonial "key to the city" dates back to medieval times. Today, cities give their keys to esteemed visitors, prominent locals, and worthy organizations.

For three days in July of 1863, a costly civil war battle raged between the Union and Confederate armies in and around the Borough of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The two armies met here in battle as the Confederate army sought to take the war to the north through the crossroads of Gettysburg. The Union army made their stand here. Strategies by both armies were sometimes grave miscalculations, the culmination of which resulted in a decisive victory for the Union. Over 51,000 Americans died during this battle. Although the Civil War continued two years following the battle of Gettysburg, the battle is viewed as the turning point of the war.

Today, hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world visit the Gettysburg battlefield, which is operated and maintained by the National Park Service. The battlefield has become a memorial to brave Americans who fought here attempting to preserve their individual beliefs. As you stand on the ground where they fought, one can visualize the terrible skirmishes that pitted American against American.
